Response 2 - Newborn - Supporting families in the beginning

Q oung Children Develop in an Environment of Relationships. Positive, nurturing relationships lead to healthy attachment. All relationships are bidirectional, meaning the infant and the caregiver are both impacting the relationship. Using information from the articles, videos (watch the Fussy Baby Network video), and the developmental websites (and other courses if relevant): PROMPTS: What are some ways parents and caregivers can foster a healthy relationship with a newborn and young infant? What are some potential obstacles a parent/ caregiver may face? Examples: Resources, parental mental health, perinatal mood disorder (postpartum), lack of family leave, breastfeeding, etc. What are some potential challenges the infant may present? Examples: premature infant, infant with medical challenges, ‘fussy’ baby, baby with developmental differences, etc. What support may the parent or caregiver need to be present, positive, and responsive with that infant? RESOURCE: Look for a resource in the community or online that may be helpful for a family if they are struggling in some way. Briefly describe what it is and why you chose it. COMMENT: Comment on a classmate. Grade Sheet: Response should be about 500 words and include at least 2 citations of material from the course or related course.

The first source I picked was the "Fussy Baby Network," which discussed what they do for new parents. After seeing the movie, I understood that because babies are still so young, it is difficult for parents and caregivers to establish a bond with them. A parent will do all in their ability to help the child; yet, sometimes everything a parent does does not fix the infant's situation. We observe the difficulties that parents face as they do everything to calm their infant. In the film, parents admit to feeling fatigued, psychologically, emotionally, and physically unwell, as well as depressed over the fact that they are unable to prevent their own child from resorting to drugs and alcohol during times of stress.
